How to Overcome the Urge to Quit

Perseverance is defined as the steady persistence in a course of action, purpose, or objective, despite difficulties, obstacles, discouragement, or an outright appearance of failure. The definition paints a picture of sheer determination against all odds and leads us to believe in the power of its core message—ultimate victory in spiteof the odds and an ability to navigate through circumstance to achieve a desired end.


Every one of us has, at times, had to face the reality of making a decision to evaluate the power of our desire to achieve an objective, dream, or goal against the odds and obstacles that exist between where we are and we desire to be. In other words, your desire and resolve to achieve a worthy goal or objective can, may, or will be challenged. Your job is to tap into the power of your desire to see the obstacles for what they truly are—opportunities to overcome, chances to evaluate and analyze, milestones to measure progress, and course corrections to better navigate.
 

 

As we set out to achieve a goal, one of the most important initial steps we should take is to ensure our objective aligns with our core beliefs. Adopting someone else’s vision or motivations for achievement sets us up for failure from the start.
 

This perspective casts a light on the importance of connecting the goal with our core beliefs because it is our core beliefs that fuel the determination that will propel us through difficulties and provide the insight and awareness required to analyze and calculate our way around inevitable obstacles.

I have long been a believer that, once you create a dream, goal, desire, or aspiration in your mind, you have the capacity to achieve it. That’s not to say that you have the ability to single-handedly achieve it (although you may), but that you have the capacityto achieve it. In other words, your achievement may require the physical, emotional, or psychological assistance of someone else or perhaps a team of people. It may require the perspective of an opposing viewpoint or the additive insight of a common and collaborative mind.

Now, keep in mind that capacity is entirely different than ability. Our abilityto achieve a goal or objective is determined by our resolve to do whatever it takes to achieve it. Resolve is formed through a framework and process of following a few simple rules that, over time, become habits and rituals we adopt in our quest for change. Our habits and rituals eventually evolve into a lifestyle that effectively changes the course of our life to better align with our goals.

Despite the best of intentions, optimal conditions, and well-developed plans, we sometimes face obstacles that can give us enough pause to question whether our goal is worthwhile. Ever felt like quitting? Good news…you’re normal.

Even the most determined among us has second thoughts, doubts, frustrations, hardships, and occasional setbacks. When that happens, take a deep breath, and consider some of the following insightful perspectives to readjust and get back in the game when you find yourself feeling as if you’re ready to quit.

Find– Simon Sinek, Best-Selling author of Start with Why, tells us that our why – the very core of the psychological reasons we are motivated to pursue a goal – is the one driving factor that can get us through most any challenging circumstance if we effectively connect with it. Our why defines the essence of our desires and is the principle driver behind the goals and objectives we create.

Every one of us has a why. So, if this is true, then why do some people achieve more, faster, or higher than others. The answer comes down to one simple but profound concept—awareness through understanding.

When we truly understand our why we become intimately connected to it in such a way that we gain an emotional awareness advantage that is unstoppable. This drives a determination so strong that achievement is inevitable, with little regard to circumstance. That is not to say it will always be easy, but achievement will ultimately become a reality, because finding our compelling why sustains our drive to achieve…no matter what.

Fix – Of all the things we need to address in our life, nothing is more important than ensuring we strive to create a harmonious balance between body, mind, and spirit. One of the best ways to do this is to set your intentions, review or recall some things you are grateful for, meditate, work out, and set goals for the day. Living with intent is a difference-maker in terms of finding, fixing, and maintaining balance.
 

The act of fixing something typically insinuates that it is in a state of disrepair and in need of an adjustment. These adjustments can range from a simple attitude correction to a total reorganization of our priorities.

Attitude is contagious. If we are spreading a positive attitude it can be healthy (for us as well as those around us), but if you’re always looking at the ugly side of life then you need to reverse your thoughts if you expect to find your way forward in life. Fix this one aspect of our emotional outlook and the world begins to change before our very eyes.

Focus – One of the biggest mistakes we can make is to compare our pace with other people who are pursuing similar goals, yet, so many of us are drawn to the game of comparison. Why is that?

Almost every human being, with little exception, analyzes the “status” of other people in an effort to draw a distinction to their own life. It’s not an intentionally harmful practice unless the analysis results in more discouragement than inspiration.
 

It can be easy to become discouraged when we compare our life to others who are achieving goals more efficiently, seemingly easier, and more often than we are. It can easily make you feel inadequate, dissatisfied, and discouraged. In reality, when it comes to achievement, the conditions and circumstances of others is irrelevant if their achievements serve only to discourage you. One of the reasons is that perceptions can be deceptive. What may appear to be ideal may indeed be far from it.

Break free from the grip of other people’s reality. It doesn’t belong to you. Find and claim your own reality and conquer your goals using your own strengths, talents, and passions. That is the formula that produces real satisfaction and accomplishment.

Focus instills determination. Never give up on the goals that are purposefully aligned to your core beliefs and you will embark upon a journey of enlightened understanding – one that supports the intent of your desires and the true joy of life.
 
Just. Don’t. Quit!
