The Real Price of Waiting Until Tomorrow

Yesterday you said you’d do it tomorrow. Today is yesterday’s tomorrow. So, will you finally do today that which you said you’d do tomorrow? Or will tomorrow never materialize?

Our good intentions can end up being a perpetual cycle of apathy and restlessness  unless…we wake up and seize control to break the cycle by taking actionto declare NOW as the time to take advantage of opportunity. Action is the precursor to accomplishment. Taking action isn’t always pretty or perfect, but the alternative is to remain stuck in circumstances that separate us from our dreams, goals, and aspirations.

“Carpe Diem: Seize the day.”

                                                                      ~ Horace: 23 B.C.

Accomplishments can easily elude us, despite our intentions, unless and until we discover the awareness of avoiding procrastination. To gain an upper hand on the ability to avoid procrastination we must first gain an appreciation for the fragility of time. The fact is, the clock is ticking at the same rate for each one of us. That same clock began to tick when we took our first breath and will stop when we take our last.

Time is the great equalizer. It does not discriminate. It does not care about winners and losers, excuses, fairness, or equality. You cannot “save” time in a traditional sense. The only way to manipulate time is to make the very best of every moment.

Time presents opportunity but demands a sense of urgency. Whatever your dream, goal, desire, or objective, start now! Every moment you wait is an opportunity that expires. After all, although we know precisely when our personal clock started, we don’t know when it will end.

“A year from now that time will have passed. You will either be happy you took action or wish you had.” ~ G. Westfal

There is a cost associated with waiting until tomorrow. Waiting induces complacency. It offers an easy excuse to rest another day before the hard work begins. The problem with that philosophy is that waiting robs us of so many things, chiefly among them is the experience of personal growth.

We often believe that waiting for the “right time” will actually lead us to the right time—a time where all the conditions will be in perfect alignment for us to take action. The truth is, that perfect moment will never materialize because there is no such thing as a perfect moment. If you want something different you must dosomething different.

I was talking to a small group of people one evening about one of the books I had written when a man declared how he too would write a book someday. I smiled politely and encouraged him to begin at once, reminding him of the perishable nature of time. I also pointed out that the only difference between a writer and everyone else is that the writer writes!

“Of all the days of the week, the one I have never seen is Someday.” ~ G. Westfal

Time has a way of slipping right past us if we ignore its value. Look back upon a significant event in your life and try to recall when it actually took place. Chances are you’ll be surprised at how much time has passed. Awareness is the window that allows us to recognize the importance of time. A simple reminder to appreciate a moment goes a long way to help us gain a greater awareness of all that is right in front of us…right now.

Nowhere is this concept of a moment of time more revealing than when we actually miss an opportunity. How many moments have you missed because you didn’t seize an opportunity? How many experiences have you allowed to slip by, fully aware of the potential consequences of your decision not to act on your gut instinct? How many first steps, first words, business opportunities, thoughts, deeds, or actions have you missed because there is always tomorrow?

“And the cat’s in the cradle and the silver spoon…

Little boy blue and the man in the moon…

‘When you coming home, dad?’ ‘I don’t know when…

But we’ll get together then…

You know we’ll have a good time then.’”  ~ Harry Chapin

Life is said to be “short” by those who look back upon their lives and “suddenly” realize the sheer amount of time they consumed by waiting for tomorrow. Despite many who will debate the semantics, tomorrow does in fact exist. It’s called today. So if you have been putting something off—for whatever reason—to be accomplished tomorrow, wake up to the fact that tomorrow is right in front you…right now!

Until next time…

~ G ~
