One of the most important steps you can take toward achieving your greatest potential is to have the right attitude. Your attitude has an impact on everything from your work performance to your relationships and is largely responsible for the opportunities—or lack thereof—that come your way.

I often begin my in-person meetings and workshops with a surprising question…

“What attitude did you bring with you today?”

This often invites confused looks from the attendees. But the truth is, most people don’t have a high level of awareness when it comes to the “color” of their outlook. Sure, they’ll know if they’re running late, or if today is a particularly stressful day compared to say yesterday. But most people are generally UNAWARE of the attitude they’re projecting at any given moment. This is a condition that can easily be overcome because, as I stated at the outset, attitude is everything!
Your attitude governs the way you see the world and governs the way the world sees you. The good news is that you have much more power over your attitude than you may think…if you are aware of it.

Awareness is your secret weapon to elevating almost every conceivable aspect of your life. To elevate your awareness, set cues and reminders that draw your attention to the way you interact with other people. This is not as complicated as it may seem. All that is required is an ability to “watch yourself” from a third-person perspective. Doing so will open the door to immediate awareness you can use to make adjustments in real-time, which will have an extraordinary effect on everything from your body posture to your internal dialogue.
Your internal dialogue is the epicenter of your attitude. You have the power to choose an inner dialogue of self-assurance, motivation, and encouragement despite whatever external circumstances are trying to otherwise convince you of. All that is required for you to make these adjustments is…awareness and a willingness to improve.

The loudest and most influential voice you’ll hear is your own inner dialogue. It is important that you are aware of how your inner voice can work for or against you, depending on the messages that you allow to prevail. You have control over the process, but only if you consciously take responsibility for and control over your inner dialogue.
We all encounter tough times, anxieties, heartbreak, and physical and emotional turmoil at times. The key is to be aware that it is not what happens to you that matters, but how you choose to respond to what happens.

It takes a personal commitment, along with a bit of work and a dose of awareness, to overcome the causes of a harmful attitude, but the rewards of your efforts will reward you for the rest of your life.

Until next time…
